When does Thanksgiving fall ? And what do Americans actually give thanks for over a roast turkey?
On the meme: Something is happening. A farmer removed me from his Facebook friends.
Thanksgiving every day
Gratitude is a beautiful thing. Psychologists say that people who are grateful (no matter to whom or for what) are happier. Ungrateful people, on the other hand, are unhappy. That’s why it’s worth being grateful, even if you don’t have anything to be grateful for. And if you search well, you’re sure to find a reason! Especially if you live in a safe, rich, democratic and free country like America.
What is Thanksgiving Day?
Thanksgiving Day is an American and Canadian national holiday. It has a connection to the history of Europeans on the continent. When the first settlers landed near Plymouth, they didn’t know if they would even survive in the new land. After all, they were sent there from England as punishment for religious heresies, not as a reward!
In 1621, after a successful harvest and hunting of various poultry (rather, they were geese, the famous turkeys were not so easy to hunt!) they held a party to thank God (remember, the US was built by Christian fundamentalists, so to speak) for the harvest. Local Indians also unexpectedly crashed into the party. Fortunately, there were no fights or shootings, everyone in the room – that is, 50 settlers and 90 Indians – sat, ate, drank and tried to communicate in broken English or the language of the Wampanoag Indian tribe. Hence, it’s also such a cool symbol for American culture that it’s possible to coexist together – provided, of course, that everyone can respect each other.
How is Thanksgiving Day celebrated in America today?
Today, Thanksgiving in America has largely lost its religious character. The long weekend is an opportunity for family reunions over the ill-fated roast turkey. You can also dine on pumpkin pies and casseroles, baked goods, potatoes… generally such a dress rehearsal before Christmas!
For balance, sports games and parades have also become popular, where you can see none other than… huge turkeys heading for the oven.
Since the middle of the 20th century, it has been customary for the US president to “pardon” some turkey, which can thus avoid the fate of its fellows. Or at least until next Thanksgiving Day….
When does Thanksgiving Day fall ?
American Thanksgiving Day falls on the fourth Thursday of November (not necessarily the last of the month!). And right after that, discounts and promotions roll in to celebrate Black Friday, so that stores can clear their shelves before the Christmas decorations and products roll in. It’s a new tradition, sometimes even called Black Eye Friday , or the Friday of the black eye due to the numerous fights and even shootings in the battle for the best household goods. Or that’s another story altogether!

Do you want something to be thankful for… and to yourself?
Learn the English language! You will then have a chance for a better and more interesting job, a healthy brain, freedom of communication, ease of travel and meeting people from all over the world!
Just as it was taught to the Indians of the Wampanoag tribe at a party in Plymouth!
And perhaps even more effectively, because the didactics of the SPEAKINGO course cleverly include all English grammar and the 2000 most important English words, the knowledge of which allows you to understand 90% of conversations in the language!
Anyway, it’s best to see for yourself or on your own – you get the first week’s tuition anyway for free and without any obligation! And after that it’s as cheap as Indian beads anyway!
And when you have learned English, you will say to yourself: thank you, thanks a lot, many thanks, Thank you, have a nice day!
